NEWSAGENCY CHAIN CONTINUES GROWTH MOMENTUM
4 November 2009
Supanews Retail Pty Ltd unveiled its latest concept newsagency in Westfield Strathpine this week. The newly configured store now is one of the largest greeting card retailers in Brisbane, along with an excellent range of magazines, stationery and gifts. Supanews purchased the existing Strathpine newsagency in 2008 and spent some time analysing local sales trends and customer demands in order to create the best targeted product range and layout to the local market.
Upon unveiling the new look shop, the business was franchised to local operators Peter and Donna Griffiths, who enthused that they were “excited about the opportunity to partner with Supanews during the network’s exciting growth phase. We expect to experience strong growth in this newly configured state due to superior layout, store design improvements, improved product ranges and marketing initiatives.”
Supanews’ Managing Director, Adrian Gaskin, says that he is encouraged by the milestone, as it “demonstrates the appeal of a professional, compliant and modern newsagency brand which services consumer needs and provides a shopping centre with an identifiable national tenant”. He went on to note that “Supanews continues to achieve great momentum despite the global economic crisis. Over 40% of our businesses have transitioned to new franchise owners over the past twelve months, amounting to $8.7 Million worth of transactions. The Supanews acquisition model is working, as it provides new franchisees an opportunity to purchase on an existing business’ turnover and profit.”
Along with this track record of acquiring existing newsagency businesses and converting them to Supanews outlets, Supanews also opens Greenfield sites in new and developed shopping Centres. Combined with a superior shopfit and ‘best in class’ practices, the model appeals to customers, Landlords and franchisees alike.
Supanews Retail is Australia’s most professional and successful newsagency retailer. All stores in the chain are compliant, professional and offer consistent brand identity incorporating world-class shop layout and design. The company’s objective is to grow the business to 100 stores within the next two years.
In October 2006, Supanews entered a joint venture with RedGroup Retal Pty Limited (RedGroup) to operate the Supanews network. RedGroup operate the Angus & Robertson bookstore chain (over 170 locations in Australia), the stationery and book retailer Whitcoulls (70 stores in New Zealand), Borders Bookstores and casual lease retailer Calendar Club.
Supanews has stores in Queensland, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria and operates corporate and franchised businesses. Its network turnover is in excess of $130 million per annum and the business expects to open its 60th store by Q2 2010. Supanews is currently looking for new sites and acquisitions across Australia.
